Recommendations and invitations have been the most helpful to me when choosing which bookshop to visit, but they don’t always cover the area I’m travelling to. The following websites have been invaluable for introducing me to new bookshops:

The Guardian independent bookshop directory

The Book Guide (secondhand and antiquarian books)

London Bookshop Map
(I've not tried this one properly yet, but it's a collection of indies)
